Thomas Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Fire Provided England's Star Leaves Egotism at the Door.
One snub was enough. A second one and it might have appeared vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is extremely shrewd not to know that claiming the World Cup trophy demands help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is also Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the strategic frameworks and team pecking order necessary with England now that he is back in Tuchel's supportive environment.
The manager wants Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is a matter of channeling it constructively. Skill matters but England know from bitter experience that there is a cost when fame prevails. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after his omission of last month’s squad. He observed England qualify at the tournament without him. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach talk about loving the team's dynamism and principles. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in top form, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; another omission would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham directed towards intimidating opponents instead of teammates. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that his period out of the team has shown him that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover for the youngster after proving that he is unafraid to drop big names.
“No issue exists with him, and no concern with the character,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham just has that aggression. It takes a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone need to support him and establish an environment which he can use that intensity towards opponents and for the objectives we are working towards as a team.”
The star dominated most of the attention at the team news conference for the upcoming meaningless matches against one opponent and the other. Who else? Well, how about another talent? This is a further gifted playmaker in need of love and guidance. He has not played for the national team since March and has struggled to hit the heights recently but Tuchel had to consider the player after his performance in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund this week.
The issue, however, is how to use the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to select another youngster once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the same XI, restricting Harry Kane’s style in the process.
It is hard to see Tuchel doing similar if it hurts the team harmony. There is room for one No 10, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clarity helps. He is in as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who must play central. The coach prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘We want you in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “He is to feature in the central attacking zone, through the center. I have this idea regarding him for a long time. I think it suits him best.”
Tuchel agreed there are occasions when the player has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has obvious passion to play football, then clearly something is not right, whether it's his role, the setup, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is additionally accustomed to playing for Man City in a certain structure, to have a defined role. I think he profits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
The manager talked about Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and Foden drilling in goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his fine form for City at defense. Interest abounds.
The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested using Foden as a false 9 versus one opponent or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are other options should Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
Meanwhile, it is also a chance to get Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting Kane to net in an international match versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in 35 games for England when the pair combined for a score. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.
“At this point at some point it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” he stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a sense of the player having to prove himself. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin against the upcoming opponents. The manager wants Bellingham committed but he will be watching him closely. Set aside self-importance at the door. It will make a powerful England team into an more effective one.
