The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
