Research Shows Over Four-Fifths of Natural Medicine Titles on Online Marketplace Probably Produced by Automated Systems

A recent study has exposed that AI-generated material has infiltrated the herbalism book segment on the e-commerce giant, with items marketing cognitive support gingko formulas, digestive aid fennel preparations, and citrus-based wellness chews.

Alarming Statistics from Automation Identification Study

Based on analyzing 558 books published in the platform's herbal remedies section between January and September of 2024, investigators found that the vast majority appeared to be created by artificial intelligence.

"This is a concerning exposure of the widespread presence of unmarked, unchecked, unregulated, likely AI content that has extensively infiltrated the platform," commented the study's lead researcher.

Professional Apprehensions About AI-Generated Health Guidance

"There's a substantial volume of natural remedy studies circulating right now that's entirely unreliable," said a medical herbalist. "AI cannot discern how to sift through the worthless material, all the garbage, that's of absolutely no consequence. It might direct users incorrectly."

One of the seemingly AI-written books, Natural Healing Handbook, presently occupies the most popular spot in the platform's dermatology, essential oil treatments and natural medicines sections. The book's opening touts the volume as "a guide for individual assurance", urging readers to "focus internally" for solutions.

Suspicious Writer Identity

The creator is named as Luna Filby, containing a marketplace listing describes this individual as a "thirty-five year old natural medicine practitioner from the coastal town of Byron Bay" and establishment figure of the brand My Harmony Herb. Nevertheless, no trace of the writer, the enterprise, or associated entities appear to have any internet existence beyond the platform listing for the title.

Identifying Automatically Created Content

Investigation identified several indicators that indicate likely automatically created herbalism content, featuring:

  • Extensive use of the nature icon
  • Botanical-inspired creator pseudonyms including Botanical terms, Nature words, and Herbal terms
  • References to controversial herbalists who have promoted unverified cures for serious conditions

Larger Trend of Unconfirmed AI Content

These publications constitute an expanding phenomenon of unconfirmed AI content being sold on the marketplace. Last year, wild mushroom collectors were advised to steer clear of foraging books marketed on the marketplace, ostensibly authored by automated programs and containing doubtful advice on identifying poisonous fungus from consumable ones.

Requests for Regulation and Marking

Publishing representatives have requested the marketplace to start identifying automatically produced content. "Every publication that is fully AI-generated must be marked as such and automated garbage must be eliminated as an immediate concern."

Reacting, the company declared: "Our platform maintains publication standards controlling which publications can be listed for acquisition, and we have proactive and reactive systems that assist in identifying material that breaches our requirements, irrespective of if artificially created or otherwise. We dedicate considerable manpower and funds to ensure our guidelines are followed, and remove publications that do not adhere to those guidelines."
