Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Leadership Change
The former official declared he would retreat from public roles after House committee released his regular communications with the financier

Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the board at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became public.

He commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate observing their progress".

The prominent academic, who previously headed Harvard University, announced on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released communications demonstrated that the economist exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for suspected trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it respected Summers' choice to resign.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the perspective he offered to the Board," OpenAI commented.

Congressional Action

This development follows after both chambers of the US legislature voted on recently to pass a legislation that would compel the Department of Justice to release its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will afterward move to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has stated he expects to sign the measure, after reversing his position on the matter following pushback from his supporters.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of Epstein-connected emails made public by the Congressional committee last week mentioned several well-known personalities in the billionaire's past associates, without implying any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The messages revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with he often attempting to introduce the academic to influential international personalities.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were made available with the public, Summers stated he assumed "total ownership for my misguided judgment to continue interacting with Mr Epstein".

He added that he desired "to reestablish faith and mend relationships with the individuals closest to me".

Professional History

The professor occupied leadership roles under Democratic administrations; acting as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.

He led the institution from the early 2000s and continues to be a academic there. When stating his departure from public duties earlier on Monday, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where the professor was a researcher, announced that Summers was no longer associated with the institution.

He joined the board of the AI company, which creates the language model, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive Sam Altman.
