RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
