Bellingham Needs to Eliminate the Nonsense to Earn a Star Place Under Tuchel.
For Bellingham to aims to force his way once again into the English strongest team, the smart move to eliminate the nonsense. His response after noticing that he was being shown after a match of uneven play in the match against Albania was not good enough.
"I’d rather not overstate it but I hold to my words 'attitude matters' and respect towards the teammates who substitute on," commented the coach. "Choices are taken and you have to accept it being a professional."
There is a lesson for Bellingham. It was unnecessary for a strop. Kane had only moments earlier made it the national team 2-0 up in a dead rubber qualifier, with only six minutes remaining and he, following an inconsistent display, received a caution for fouling an opponent. It was not a questionable change. Actually it might have been reckless for the manager to leave Bellingham on considering it was possible the midfielder would rule himself out of the initial fixture of the World Cup by picking up a second yellow card.
Turning the Spotlight to Himself
Yet Bellingham drew all eyes toward himself. There was no disguising the young midfielder's frustration when he clocked that he was going to make way for a teammate. His arms went up in exasperation and although he accepted the coach's hand after making his way to the bench it was clear that the manager was displeased.
This represents the hurdle for Bellingham. He praised Rashford for providing the assist for Kane to head in the team's second, but his other actions was self-defeating. It's not like protesting was going to reverse the substitution. The German has repeatedly emphasized respecting team hierarchies and the necessity of acting professionally.
Under Scrutiny
Bellingham, not included in the previous squad, has faced close inspection after returning to the team recently. Practically he has been on trial and his actions haven't benefited him with his response to being taken off as the side completed a flawless qualification run by overcoming a tough opposition from Albania.
The System and the Setup
As a result the jury is out on whether the squad operate most effectively with Bellingham in the team. What we saw was not definitive. Some new ideas were tested by the coach in the beginning. Under him, England have gained the team structure and clarity over the past few matches, building with a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder and dedicated wide players, but it felt different against Albania. Quansah was handed his international debut, Wharton made his first start at this level and the use of John Stones as a makeshift midfielder created a faint echo to Manchester City’s 2023 treble winners.
Inconsistent Display
Bellingham was a mixed bag. He made a chance for Eze after the break but at times seemed trying too hard. There were a lot of poorly executed passes. There was a needless bit of aggro against an opponent early on. The team looked disjointed after halftime. One Albania chance followed Bellingham gave the ball away. His caution was shown after he lost the ball by Broja and fouled Broja.
Squad Strength Shows
In the end the squad's strength was decisive. Tuchel introduced Phil Foden, who appeared more naturally fitted to the spot occupied by Bellingham earlier in the match, and the Arsenal winger. Eventually Saka whipped in a set-piece for Kane to score the first goal. It was a reminder that dead-ball situations will be crucial next summer.
Relationship Not Broken
Nevertheless, Bellingham was the story. The brilliance of Rashford's cross for Kane's goal was a little lost amid the drama of the substitution incident. At the end, everyone was watching him. Tuchel walked up to his side and directed the player towards the away supporters. Their connection is not broken. Tuchel hasn't decided to abandon him at this stage. Yet whether the coach is prepared to give him the central position remains in doubt.
